Rebel One Studios joins START-UP NY

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – November 1, 2016 – Rebel One Studios, an early stage animation production company, is proud to announce their acceptance into the START-UP NY program in partnership with the University at Buffalo. Already providing area businesses with sophisticated 3D and 2D animations, visualizations and motion graphics – the STARTUP-NY program will aid the company in expanding their team and elevating their services.

START-UP NY (SUNY Tax-free Areas to Revitalize and Transform Upstate New York) offers new and expanding businesses the opportunity to operate tax-free for ten years on or near eligible university or college campuses in New York State. Rebel One Studios is committed to making the most of this incentive by creating positions for local creative talent and locating on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

“Traditionally, animation studios had to locate in very large cities,” said Joe Hund, co-founder and Business Development Director at Rebel One Studios. “Buffalo presents a unique opportunity in the form of the University at Buffalo. Two key components of making a service like ours viable are access to processing power and availability of skilled labor. UB’s impressive computing capability and robust media program surpass those needs, enabling us to feel confidant entering into and investing in a growing market. We’re very excited to partner with a world-class institution and WNY’s premier source of innovation.”

“The University at Buffalo, in particular the Center for Computational Research, is excited to partner with Rebel One Studios in this innovative economic development program which is showing the nation that New York State is the smart choice for new and exciting companies to grow their businesses,” said Thomas Furlani, PhD, director of UB’s Center for Computational Research. “Rebel One Studios’ focus on creating stand-alone, high-detail animation and demonstration videos make it a natural partner to tap into UB’s expert researchers and cutting-edge facilities while providing opportunities to enterprising students and recent graduates.”

Rebel One – Year One

As animators it’s our job to elevate our clients products and services by bringing to life their visions, concepts and hordes of the undead. Alright, we’ve yet to animate (or reanimate) a plague of zombies, but one year ago we did sign the paperwork that would make our vision a reality and formed Rebel One Studios.

It’s been an incredible experience getting this company off the ground and having the opportunity to work on a number of challenging and exciting projects. However, the best part has been the relationships that we’ve built. A massive thanks to all of our clients, colleagues, comrades, collaborators and an amazing circle of supporters who have freely taken the time to advocate for us even though we had little to offer in return. Nothing encourages us more than mentors at the top reaching down into the murk at the bottom to help us find the right rungs on the ladder. Having allies, from all walks of life, believe in us has made it possible to continue believing in ourselves. And having creative, innovative clients that quickly see the application of our services has made it possible for us to keep driving forward. Again, thank you all.

As good as the story has been so far, chapter two promises more action, more excitement and more gore (alright, I can’t promise zombies) adventure! We’ve got some partnerships in the works that will allow us to continue improving the quality of our work and the efficiency of our process, as well as some new projects, the results of which we can’t wait to share.

If you have any ideas that you’d like to discuss for your next project or proposal, or even if you just want to scratch out a brainstorm to see what possibilities exist (I assure you they’re in there), please feel free to reach out to us anytime.

Cheers!
The Rebel One Team

Breaking Down Technological Language Barriers

We live during an age of ever-progressing technological innovation, which can be both exciting and at times frustrating. For example, we recently worked with a client who has an amazing technology service to market, but was having a hard time explaining how it works to their customer base. The very words ‘High Performance Computing’ bring to mind confusing binary code, blinking server lights, and technical jargon – all of which sound terrifying to the non-computer-science grads among us.

We were tasked with presenting our clients service visually, as a tool for businesses that is both approachable and accessible. Using a bright color palette,  fun and relatable 2D characters, as well as crisp motion graphics we broke down what could seem like an overwhelming amount of information into an easy to follow story of how this service might fit your day-to-day business needs.

The systems behind current tech are growing more and more complex, but the methods through which we interact with them become more efficient and intuitive by the day. If your marketing approach doesn’t express to your clients just how easy your product is to use, let us help you come up with a strategy and visual representation that can!

Evolve Your Brand

Have you ever considered rebranding your business? Ever felt like your existing logo could be more eye-catching? Maybe you just saw a dynamic design in a commercial that made you feel like yours could use some updating. Sometimes a little motion is all you need. Here is a simple, yet effective, example of how one of our clients chose to show the advancement of their old branding into their new logo design:

“Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs; it’s about deliberately choosing to be different.” – Michael Porter

Your branding isn’t just an image, it’s an identity – a visual representation of your presence and philosophy. In the process of developing the right logo animation for this client, we provided them with several options to best fit their strategy. Here are just a few of the draft animations we produced:

Wendel – Evolve Construction Logo from Rebel One Studios on Vimeo.

The preceding option was more of a “build-up” style animation, which we thought lent itself to the nature of the client’s business – architecture and interior design.

Wendel – Evolve Logo Fractured from Rebel One Studios on Vimeo.

That was another completely different approach we considered for the treatment of the logo, using fractured planes and light.

With just a few examples you can see how the different treatments in animation can completely change the representation of your brand. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide how best to tell your story – the options are endless!

Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Re-Use

Last Thursday, Kaleida Health hosted a public forum at Kleinhan’s Music Hall to present four competing proposals on the re-use of Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. Each developer had twelve minutes to present their vision for re-development of the site, located in the Elmwood village of Buffalo, NY.

We were very excited to be a part of this first look at new ideas for the 125-year old site, and for the chance to work with Sinatra & Company Real Estate to help bring their vision to life. Our goal was to engage the public with an animated overview of Sinatra’s proposal that conveyed not just the raw structure, but also the spirit of their design. Further, it was important to us that we incorporate early architectural plans in a way that conveyed their preliminary nature, as public input is a key component in the final product.

Take a look below to see our contribution to the public presentation:

How Much Does an Explainer Video Cost?

If you’ve spent any time on the internet lately, you might be aware of a few new trends on the rise when it comes to promoting your business. Explainer videos are fast becoming an informative, and creative way to communicate with your customers. They are less costly than hiring actors and a production crew to shoot a live commercial, and they have the added benefit of portraying your business’ specific style and branding. Instead of having a wall of text on your website explaining your product or services, why not use a fun and imaginative animation instead?

What is an Explainer Video?

An explainer video is a short animated video that can be anywhere from 30 seconds, to 3 minutes long; and has the goal of communicating information about your product or service in an engaging and memorable way. The specific style of explainer videos varies from client to client but if you’re looking for inspiration you can see our demo reel here.

How much does an Explainer Video cost?

Like many production services the cost of animation varies based on length and complexity of the animation, as well as other factors like deadline, and additional audio services (voice talent, music, sound effects). However, as a general guideline, the range of cost can be from $3,000 on the low end, to $10,000 on the high end for a complete animated video.

Where can I get an Explainer Video?

Thanks to the internet, there are many options available to you for creative talent, but where do you start?  Traditionally, larger businesses who already have an established connection with an Ad agency would commission an animation through their agency, but for small businesses that isn’t always an option because of the cost involved. Not only are you paying the ad agency for your animation, but you’re also paying for the company they hire to create the animation.

Luckily there is another option; Rebel One Studios will work directly with you, or your marketing department to create an animated explainer video for you. We handle all pre-production, production, and post-production services in-house, so there’s no need to hire an ad agency as well. That’ll be good news for your budget, and even better news for your customer communication.
